Woman visits Springfield in quest to break cycling record

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — On Monday, a cyclist made her way through the downtown Springfield square while on her way to breaking the Around the World cycling record.

Lael Wilcox is riding from Chicago to New York City, Portugal to Georgia, around Australia and New Zealand, and then Alaska before arriving back in Chicago.

“It’s been so cool, this kind of thing,” said Wilcox. “I’ve been out here. This is day 107. And I didn’t know how things would go and I’ve just been having a blast.”

So far, Wilcox has cycled over 17,000 miles. She started her trip on May 26, and to beat the record, she must finish the 18,000 miles in 110 days.
