Serving The Ozarks: Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services

This week we are highlighting an organization providing the building blocks to a brighter future.

What’s now a part of Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services began as the Springfield Regional Girls Shelter in 1974.

The shelter first housed homeless young women in Springfield but has since grown into a transitional housing program for both boys and girls.

The program’s home base has also called the Ashley House in Springfield home for many decades.

Located on East Pythian Street, the Ashley House was built in the 1960s and was then donated by the Ashley family in the 1980s in honor of their daughter Cindy Ashley.

Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services has recently put a greater focus on strengthening families, to prevent the cycle of abuse that often is seen among families in the foster care system.

When it comes to transitional housing and the Ashley House, that focus means providing young adults with the basic skills they will need when they leave foster care and enter a new phase in life.
