Intersection of National Avenue and Division Street will close for more than a month

In two weeks, the intersection of National Avenue and Division Street will close to traffic for more than a month.

As work continues to improve the pavement, railroad crossing and traffic signals, the intersection will be blocked from Oct. 7 to Nov. 21, depending on weather and the contractor’s progress. According to a city news release, all businesses, properties and cross streets in the area will remain open and accessible. To travel around the closure, a detour route has been designated using Pythian Street, Fremont Avenue, Commercial Street, Benton Avenue and Chestnut Expressway.

The closure comes after work began in early August. The project aims to improve the intersection, pedestrian safety and accessibility, the railroad crossing and City Utilities gas, water and electric utilities. It is estimated to be completed in early 2025.

“The layout of the intersection and use of a signal truss can be confusing for motorists. The railroad crossing also adds in another layer of complexity,” Project Manager Zach Butcher said in the release. “This project is going to create a more clear, cohesive and safe intersection for all users.”
