Serving The Ozarks: ALAS

This week we’re highlighting an organization supporting diverse families living, working, and learning here in the Ozarks.

Hispanic Heritage Month begins on Mexico’s Independence Day on September 16th and goes through mid-October, but all year round, there is a non-profit in Springfield serving local Hispanic and Latino people as they put down roots and look for opportunities to improve their lives.

ALAS stands for Alliance for Leadership, Achievement and Success, and for nearly ten years it has been opening doors for diverse groups through education.

Alas was founded in 2015 by best friends Yeni Vasquez and Jordana Vera. The two were born and raised in Mexico, but met in Springfield while studying at Missouri State University.

“Our goal wasn’t to support families who speak Spanish only. But of course, we are Hispanic and we know the community,” saidVasquez.

Jordana Vera said she and Yeni felt isolated during their time at Missouri State because they were non-traditional students.
