Kickapoo High marching band wins state championship for second year in a row

For the second year in a row, Kickapoo High School is home to Missouri’s state champion marching band.

The Kickapoo Golden Arrow Band, under the direction of Aaron Scriven, competed Saturday, Oct. 19, at the state’s Marching Association Championships in Columbia.

The band advanced to finals and was named the grand champion for 6A, a classification reserved for high schools with the largest enrollment. It also received awards for Outstanding Music and Outstanding Visual.

“It’s really cool. The students are very excited by the whole opportunity. It’s fun to be good. It’s even more fun to be good and win,” Scriven said Monday. “They were very excited Saturday night and we’re just very pleased with their progress.”

Scriven, in his fifth year at Kickapoo, said this was the marching band’s third contest of the season, which will conclude in mid-November.

“The first competition was at Ozark High School and we were the grand champions of that as well. That’s the third year in a row we’ve been grand champions at that festival,” he said.
