Clever Police Chief resigns after domestic violence charges

CLEVER, Mo. — The City of Clever left without a chief of police as Michael Evans resigns. This comes after he was charged with domestic assault in Greene County.

Brenda Gardner has lived in Clever for 36 years, she says she had hope for the former chief.

“I thought he was going to be good. He wasn’t real cocky. Didn’t seem like he was going to be gung-ho and go out to make a name for himself. And that’s really kind of the type of police chief that I had hoped we would have here in Clever” says Gardner.

Evans was only in the role for three months as he was sworn in this August. Gardner says it is unfortunate the city needs a new police chief so soon.

“I just hate the fact that now we will have to be looking again, and we’ll be looking for someone and we don’t know what their personality is or how good they’ll be” says Gardner.

The Clever Police Department is small, with a limited number of officers on duty. Gardner says that during Evans’ time as chief, she saw a larger presence from the department in the community.
