Lawrence Co. Deputy saves homeowner from fire in Mt. Vernon

(KOAM) — A Lawrence County Deputy is being honored for saving a homeowner from a fire.

According to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Derek Perkins was on patrol, driving the streets of Mt. Vernon, when he noticed heavy smoke coming from down the road.

Deputy Perkins went to investigate the fire when he discovered a vehicle under an attached carport was on fire.

The sheriff’s office says the fire was quickly spreading to the main portion of the home. Deputy Perkins found the homeowner asleep in her bedroom, woke her up, and took her outside.

The Mt. Vernon Fire Protection District arrived on scene and managed to contain and put out the fire.

“Without Deputy Perkin’s quick actions, this house fire could have ended in the worst way. Congratulations Deputy Perkins for being a true hero!” – Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.
