After weeks of relative silence, the New Madrid Fault reminded everyone of its presence on Thursday afternoon after the 2nd largest quake in the region for 2025 was felt by dozens in Missouri.
If you were anywhere near the boot heel of Missouri Thursday afternoon around 3:23pm, you may have noticed a little jolt. According to the USGS earthquake map, a 2.8 magnitude quake shook the area centered just across the river from Missouri in Dyersburg, Tennessee.
At least 27 people have contacted the USGS and confirmed they felt the quake which ranks as one of the largest New Madrid Fault quakes of 2025 so far. The largest of the year so far happened just after the first of the year on January 3, 2025 registering a 2.9 magnitude.
Any quakes less than 3 in magnitude are not strong enough to cause any type of damage. It’s when a quake hits that’s greater than 4 or 5 that you look for minor damage…
