Springfield City Utilities declares large-scale emergency

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Edited News Release/KY3) – A severe storm system with extremely high winds caused significant damage across the Springfield metro area, causing widespread power outages throughout City Utilities’ service territory.

As of 5:30 p.m., City Utilities confirmed nearly 41,000 customers without power. That was down from the peak of 50,000 customers earlier in the day. That is the largest outage since the 2007 ice storm. Crews expect outages to last days. The utility asked for mutual assistance to support the response.

Other electric companies report outages in Barry, Christian, Dade, Dallas, and Lawrence Counties. At 3:30 p.m., Liberty reported around 15,000 customers without power, mainly in the Aurora, Republic, and Willard areas. Liberty’s water customers may have low water pressure…
