“It’s a great blessing”: meal handout volunteers overwhelmed by community response

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers say their free meal handouts at the Red Cross in Springfield have received praise from residents who continue to struggle from the April 29 power outage.

“It’s a great blessing, it really is,” Jana Stahlhuth, feeding coordinator, said. “And, you know, sometimes they’re just crying when they come to the car, and we hand them food and sometimes we pray with them. Or sometimes I start crying to!”

One such resident was Christina Bennet, who, like many, has been without power for days. She says she is grateful to relief organizations like Missouri Baptist for helping her family, among others, in a time of need…
