FIRST ALERT WEATHER: Buckling roads noted in parts of Missouri

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Our first taste of summer heat kicked off this month with highs in the 90s this past weekend. Couple that with our wetter-than-normal spring, which leads to a chance for some area roads to buckle, as seen in the buckling incident on Siemeres Drive in Cape Girardeau this past Sunday.

While MoDOT says figuring out which roads will buckle is unpredictable, district maintenance engineer Jimmy Shannon says the weather and gaps in the concrete design all play a role.

“With the heat, that pavement can contract and expand, and so that causes pressure,” Shannon says. “You add in there the moisture that can get under the pavement, and that can weaken the pavement. It’ll cause that pavement to buckle or warp.”…
