Counselors see a rise in sextortion around the Ozarks

OZARK, Mo. (KY3) – Even if your kids say they are sure they know all of their online friends, you never truly know the intentions of the person on the other side of the screen.

Therapists and counselors in the Ozarks are seeing not only an increase in cases of sextortion, but they’re seeing it in younger kids and teens because of how easy it is to get access to the internet.

“I’m seeing young kiddos come in,” said Elizabeth Troutwine, a licensed professional counselor with Touchstone Counseling, “and they’re telling me all of these wonderful people that they’re talking to on Discord or Omegle, and it’s raising red flags because parents aren’t aware that this is happening. There’s no supervision on these apps, and they don’t seem to understand what’s going on and why it’s concerning.”…
