On Your Side: Ozark firefighters clarifying calls asking for donations not a scam

OZARK, Mo. (KY3) – We hear so often about different texts and phone calls, people asking for money to be paid, or claiming they’re from a sheriff’s office or police department, but what if you got a phone call that seemed sketchy, but turned out to be legitimate?

Recently in Ozark, some residents have been receiving phone calls from an organization called Community Safety Net. The phone calls ask about donations as part of a partnership with the Ozark Fire Protection District. However, according to the fire district, this time the phone calls are legitimate, and they are to collect money to publish fire safety books for children.

“The books just have basic fire safety information on there,” said Jeff Owens, assistant chief of prevention, Ozark Fire Protection District. “And so, instead of us trying to purchase them outright, these companies are already publicizing them and just getting donations for sending them out.”…
