Remember to practice grilling and food safety this holiday weekend

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Grilled meats and cold salads are some of the staple foods of the July 4th holiday.

While they are extremely popular, they can also be extremely dangerous if not handled properly. When cleaning your grill before a barbecue, ensure you are using the correct type of brush. Most health experts recommend that people avoid using wire bristle brushes, as they can detach and become lodged in food, potentially creating serious health problems. Additionally, individuals should use a meat thermometer to monitor the internal temperature, ensuring the meat is fully cooked. Even though the food may be cooked, you’re not done ensuring it stays safe.

“Meat can stay at an unsafe temperature for up to 3 hours. So you do have a little time there to serve your guests and enjoy your time with your friends, but then I’d definitely be watching that, and thinking about what is three hours after that’s cooked,” said Donna Webb from Bright Sky Nutrition…
