Heavy rains and floodwater impacting waterways

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Recent heavy rain has led to flooded streets and high water levels in the area. Some may be wondering where all the excess water winds up once the flooding dies down.

Brent Stock, Executive Director of the James River Basin Partnership, says in Springfield, all floodwater eventually makes its way into storm drains and urban streams before flowing into a larger body of water.

“If you’re in Springfield, three-quarters of the town drains south to Table Rock Lake and then into the White River system all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico,” Stock said. “If you live above about Division Kearney Street, your water flowing north and it’s going to go up to the Missouri River before it makes its way over to the Mississippi and then again eventually into the Gulf of Mexico.”…
