Jail incident results in new charge for Springfield man

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A man has been given a new charge in jail following the death of Chaviz Nguyen in Springfield in 2023.

According to online court documents, Timothy Hester has been charged with first-degree assault following an incident in the Greene County Juvenile Detention Facility in 2024. Hester is also charged with first-degree murder, four counts of armed criminal action, first-degree attempted assault and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon following an incident in downtown Springfield in 2023.

The probable cause statement says law enforcement responded to Greene County Juvenile Detention Facility following a report of a 17-year-old juvenile male, who was later identified as Hester, that was “becoming violent” on July 24, 2024.
