A 45-year-old Springfield man has been indicted by federal grand jury for allegedly assaulting a U.S. Postal Service worker who was delivering mail in the Seminole Holland neighborhood.
A felony complaint initially was filed against Courtney Ellis on June 23 alleging that on the morning of June 18 he assaulted a postal worker delivering mail to his home in the 1900 block of South Virginia Avenue with a wooden board and continued to aggressively approach the worker. The grand jury indictment replaced this initial felony complaint.
According to court documents, the postal worker, wearing his official uniform, was struck by something on the right side of his head after placing mail in the mailbox. After observing the wooden board in the driveway, the worker saw Ellis walking toward him. Ellis allegedly yelled “You don’t belong here” and continued to approach and yelled and cursed at the USPS worker who was retreating to his marked vehicle.
