What’s Going Around: CoxHealth introduces new aortic aneurysm procedure

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – New technology at CoxHealth in Springfield is providing patients with aortic aneurysms access to a newly FDA-approved procedure called Thoracoabdominal Branch Endoprosthesis, or TAMBE.

“Your aorta is the biggest blood vessel that runs from your heart down to go to your legs, and as it’s going through your chest and your belly, it gives off big branches to feed your intestines and your kidneys,” said Dr. Gallo. “It essentially supplies your whole body with blood.”

Dr. Stephen Gallo said an aneurysm happens when the wall of the aorta grows bigger and bigger until it can rupture, which can be fatal. Previously, the surgery for an aortic aneurysm could leave a patient in the hospital for weeks, and many were in need of physical therapy afterward, but he said the recovery after the TAMBE procedure is different…
