Storms have long wreaked havoc on Springfield, including the destructive April 18, 1880 Marshfield cyclone/tornado, which also touched down in southeastern Greene County, including what is now Galloway Village. That deadly event claimed the lives of nearly 100 people, including Susannah Carney Galloway, who was 45 at the time of her death.
The tornadoes, or cyclones, as they were then called, were part of an outbreak of tornadoes that impacted the Midwest April 18-20, 1880 and killed a total of 167 people.
Susannah was a native of Tennessee who moved with her parents to Missouri as a small child. She was the mother of 11 children, nine of whom survived infancy, and the first wife of Maj. Charles Galloway, the namesake of Galloway Village…
