Hungry hummingbirds passing through Missouri

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Across Missouri during the end of summer and beginning of fall, there is an increase in the number of some pollinators people encounter. One of those pollinators is hummingbirds.

The tiny birds known for their wing speed and flying in all directions travel hundreds of miles to find warmer destinations in Mexico, South America, and even the Caribbean.

Francis Skalicky with the Missouri Department of Conservation says you might have a hard time keeping hummingbird feeders filled this time of year. Resident hummingbirds are eating more to prepare for their long journey, travelling hummingbirds need food along the way, and all of the hummingbirds are joined by their young from earlier in the year.

Skalicky says now is a great time to have a hummingbird feeder out where you can see it, so you can observe the tiny birds and learn more about them as they make the long journey…
