A 19-year-old college student damaged 17 vehicles in late August, and asked ChatGPT if he could go to jail for the vandalism.
Police say ChatGPT messages helped confirm details of the vandalism
A Springfield teenager is facing a felony charge after police say he caused significant damage to multiple vehicles in a Missouri State University freshman parking lot in late August.
According to Greene County court records, 18-year-old Ryan Joseph Schaefer is charged with first-degree property damage, a felony offense. Investigators say Schaefer entered the lot at 2:49 a.m. on August 28 and stayed for more than 30 minutes. During that time, he allegedly vandalized 17 vehicles by breaking windshields, tearing off mirrors and wipers, and denting hoods.
Damage Estimates and Witness Accounts
Court documents note the cost of repairs for just one Honda Accord totaled nearly $2,500, though a full damage estimate has not been released. Photos of the suspect were shared across campus, and a witness later identified Schaefer. According to the probable cause statement, Schaefer admitted to that witness that he had “smashed a windshield while he walked home.”
Shoes, Cell Data, and ChatGPT Messages Used in Case
Police questioned Schaefer on September 29, though he denied involvement. Officers seized his phone and shoes, which investigators say matched shoe prints found on several of the damaged vehicles. Phone records also placed him at the parking lot during the time of the vandalism.
Investigators later recovered a ChatGPT conversation from Schaefer’s phone. Around 3:47 a.m., about ten minutes after the damage reportedly ended, he described smashing cars and asked if he could be jailed. ChatGPT reportedly responded by encouraging him to “seek help.”
Charges and Possible Penalties
Schaefer is being held in Greene County Jail on a $7,500 bond. If convicted, he could face up to four years in prison.
