SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Dickerson Park Zoo says one of its most iconic animals, the majestic bald eagle, Phoenix, has died.
Phoenix was humanely euthanized on Oct. 14, 2025. DP Zoo says Phoenix had been receiving care for age-related joint issues over the past several years.
“As a geriatric bird, we knew this day would come, but we can never truly be ready for it emotionally,” said Dr. Stephanie Carle, head veterinarian at Dickerson Park Zoo, in a press release. “She was such a great bird, and her whole team was adamant about ensuring her comfort until the very end.”
For many decades, Phoenix has been beloved by many and was the star of more than 1,000 conservation programs at the zoo, including Eagle Days, on-ground events, school assemblies, and more, inspiring many to protect wildlife. DP Zoo says she was respected and admired by over 100,000 people…
