SPD, sheriff’s office to increase patrols near school bus routes this week

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – This week, Oct. 20-24, is National School Bus Safety Week and Springfield Public Schools are showing their dedication to student safety by partnering with the Springfield Police Department and the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.

SPD and the sheriff’s office will be increasing patrols near SPS bus routes this week to enforce stop-arm enforcement, with the goal of educating drivers.

“When a school bus extends its stop arm and the red lights are flashing, it’s not a suggestion. It’s the law,” said Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams. “Stopping protects lives and keeps our community’s most vulnerable members safe. If one reminder or one stop prevents a tragedy, then every effort is worth it.”…
