SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Counterfeit detection pens may not provide reliable protection against sophisticated fake currency, according to Federal Reserve warnings.

The Federal Reserve cautions that detection pens catch basic counterfeits but fail to detect well-disguised fakes. Criminals use bleaching and reprinting methods to transform one-dollar bills into hundred-dollar bills, which can fool detection pens.

The pens may also produce false results with older or dirty genuine bills.
