31st annual Turkey Trot kicks off Thanksgiving in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – If you want to earn those Thanksgiving calories early Thursday, a Springfield tradition is back for the 31st year so you can do just that.

The 5k race around Springfield starts at 8 a.m. with plenty of fun costumes, festive people, and even some dogs running too.

“It’s easy to think of Thanksgiving as a day where we all just sit around and wait for lunch to be ready,” said Jenny Fillmer Edwards with the Springfield-Greene County Park Board, “and then we lay around and watch football and it’s sort of a lazy day. But it’s great, especially if you have a house full of people to have something to get out and do together, and then come back with a sense of accomplishment, of ‘I’ve run a 5k. I’ve already done something big today,’ and it gives you sort of that permission to have an extra slice of pie or to overly indulge and then lie around and watch football for the rest of the day. You’ve really earned your calories already.”…
