There’s been a definite shift in the pattern from the mild days of just last week to an early winter feel. Cold weather has been a rare commodity so far this fall, but it’s showing up in a much bigger way now.
Temperatures today were a taste of what’s to come for Thanksgiving. The good news is that there are no major weather concerns as you make your way “over the hills and through the woods”.
A wave of clouds tonight should be on the way out by sunrise on Thanksgiving Day. Conditions will be cold with areas of frost, climbing into the 40s during the afternoon under mostly clear skies. Light winds and bright conditions will make for pretty nice afternoon conditions if you’ve got plans for a family football game or a long walk to work off the big meal.
We’ll close out the week with another chilly and quiet day Friday. Hot deals Friday will come with waves of clouds and breezier winds. The increase in clouds and wind will be clues that the next storm is approaching.
The storm will arrive Friday night as cold rain for most locations. Higher elevation areas east of Springfield between Hwy. 60 and I-44 could start off with a little sleet or wet snow. Areas east of Hwy. 63 will likely start as wet snow before changing to a cold rain shortly after sunrise Saturday morning. Light accumulations are possible on mainly grassy surfaces near and east of Hwy. 63. Any accumulations will quickly be washed away by rain Saturday morning.
Rain and mist will fall throughout the day and evening Saturday, and it’s looking like a day best spent indoors. Cold temperatures and gusty winds will make for a raw day.
Colder air will race into the region Saturday night, and there may be a window where mist lingers long enough for temperatures to go below freezing. This would make for a little freezing drizzle or possibly some snow flurries early Sunday.
Clouds will likely persist into the afternoon, and they may stick around through the afternoon as well. The gloom will come with cold late November temperatures, with most of the day below freezing.
December will come in with a winter feel and look. The pattern on Monday still has an interesting look for snow lovers. There will be a steady supply of cold air along with a storm system moving through the region. The question is, will these ingredients overlap enough to produce some winter weather locally? As it stands right now, the answer is still a maybe. It looks like a cloudy and cold day with temperatures remaining near or below freezing. Some light precipitation will likely move through the area as snow showers or flurries. Given the cold temperatures, we may indeed see some light accumulations in some areas.
