Baby delivered at Wonders of Wildlife before first responders arrived

Springfield’s Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium was the scene of some unexpected holiday magic Wednesday, Dec. 3, when it welcomed a new baby — a human one — into the world.

At around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Springfield Fire Department and Mercy EMTs received a call for a woman in labor at the aquarium. Eli Snider, senior emergency medical dispatcher with Mercy, took the call from someone who was with the mother and guided them through the delivery on the phone. He said the call lasted only about seven minutes.

He said the priority dispatch system ProQA helps with assessing the situation through guided questions and instructs how to help the mom get into a comfortable position, time the contractions, guide the delivery, and ensure medical professionals have all the information on arrival…
