Can decorative sweet potatoes be saved over winter and replanted in the spring?

Yes, these tubers can be successfully stored over the winter to be replanted. Just as edible sweet potatoes can be stored. The tubers should be dug before the first frost, then allowed to dry for 24 hours or so before putting into storage. The storage area should be cool (55 to 65 degrees), dark and well ventilated. The basement or a closet would be an appropriate place for this. Storage in the fridge is not suitable as the temperatures, even in a vegetable drawer, are too cold for sweet potatoes. The tubers should be wrapped in moist newspaper or placed in moist sand or peat moss, checking frequently during the storage period for any sign of decay. As with regular sweet potatoes, these tubers can be used to start slips in March, placing one end of the tuber in water or soil, then breaking off 6-10” slips to be rooted in water before…..
