Mild air returns going into the New Year

The recent winter blast resulted in the 5th largest temperature drop in 12 hours in Springfield’s history, dropping 51 degrees from 12 PM on Sunday to midnight. However, the frigid cold will be short-lived, and today will already be turning in the right direction.

Temperatures this afternoon will reach the mid-40s, and Wednesday will be in the low 50s. Both days will come with abundant sunshine and light winds from the west, around 10 mph.

Those going out on New Year’s Eve to ring in 2026 should dress for the cold, but not arctic conditions. Temperatures at midnight in the Ozarks will be in the mid-30s with a calm west wind.

New Year’s Day will be nice as well, with clouds increasing for the afternoon. Temperatures should make it into the low 50s again with winds generally out of the southeast.

A storm system will pass by to the south on Friday, slinging clouds across the area, but not much rain. Showers will be possible south of the state line, but any rain amounts will be light. No cold air is attached to this storm, so temperatures will climb back into the 50s on Friday.

Mild January weather will rule through the weekend. A cool Saturday will give way to highs that may top 60° on Sunday. Mild weather will hang around into early next week…
