“We got to get out of here”; Couple recounts New Year’s Day fire in south Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — For engaged couple Anthony Davidson and Kaela Edge, New Year’s Eve was almost like any other night.

So similar that when Edge heard a car alarm, she wasn’t too worried…at first.

“I was dead asleep, and we got home from hanging out for some friends, and I woke up to just a loud, blaring car alarm, and usually I wake up, and it’ll turn off and I go back to bed, but it just wasn’t [turning off],” Edge said. “I went up to the window to check and all I saw was people and this orange light all over, and I was like, ‘crap, there’s a fire.’ I woke up my fiancé and I was like, ‘Anthony, there’s a fire. Please help me get our cats. We just got to get out of here’, and we were out in, I want to say, like, 30 seconds…
