City Utilities to begin door-to-door checks for unidentified water service lines next week

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — City Utilities (CU) will begin to go door-to-door next week to ask permission to inspect customer-owned water service lines with unknown materials as part of its service line identification project.

This door-to-door effort is the next phase of the city’s water service line identification initiative, so the city can keep in line with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Revised Lead and Copper Rule. The rule is meant to identify any lead or galvanised service lines, which can bring lead into drinking water under certain conditions.

Federal regulations require CU to document privately-owned water service line materials of homes built before Jan. 1, 1989. Over 52,000 customer-owned water service lines have been identified, but there are approximately 38,000 customer-owned lines whose materials are still unknown, according to CU…
