Record-breaking cold gives way, details when you can expect snow to melt

You don’t need to be a meteorologist to know this morning’s temperatures were brutal. Thermometers plunged to -11 degrees in Springfield, with a feels-like temperature of -23.

Clear skies combined with nearly half a foot of snow on the ground helped lock in the cold, pushing temperatures to record lows across Springfield, Joplin, West Plains, and Rolla. The good news? Some relief is on the way.

Our supply of arctic air is beginning to shut off as winds turn to the southwest, allowing temperatures to slowly rebound. Highs on Tuesday will climb to around the freezing mark for most locations.

Direct sunlight, milder temperatures, and treated roadways will help kick off the melting process. While the melt will be slow, we should finally begin chipping away at more than six inches of snow.
