Officials say hundreds waiting for mental healthcare in a jail cell

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Public administrators in Missouri want the state to provide better care for the hundreds of residents who remain in jail awaiting both a trial and a bed to become available at a state psychiatric facility.

Reports indicate that there are more than 400 people locked up in country detention facilities that are still waiting for mental health screening and potential treatment.

“So the idea is to always catch it at the earliest stage, get people on the right track, get people the treatment that they need,” Danielle Boggs, the public administrator for Webster County, said. “Sometimes that doesn’t happen.”…
