SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – The Springfield Fire Department is warning residents about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries after crews responded to a challenging battery fire Thursday.
The department’s hazmat team arrived to find a battery bank still burning after several fire extinguishers had been used, but failed to extinguish the flames. Firefighters deployed a specialized lithium battery fire blanket, a critical tool the department acquired through a community grant.
These fires pose significant risks, often requiring large volumes of water and generating toxic runoff during suppression efforts.
