Mercy changes VBAC policy, removing midwives from high-risk deliveries

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Some local mothers, already weeks into their pregnancies, are searching for new care after Mercy changed its policy this week on who is allowed to perform vaginal births after caesarean, known as VBACs.

Previously, midwives through Mercy’s midwife program were permitted to perform VBACs. Under the new policy, OB/GYNs will lead the care team for patients with high-risk pregnancies.

In a statement, Mercy said: “Mercy is proud to provide a comprehensive women’s health program, including low-intervention birth plans. Because our midwives and OB/GYNs work closely together, we’re able to help patients move safely through their birth plan and adjust as needed to ensure a safe delivery for mother and baby. Our collaborative approach means our patients’ care stays connected, informed, and centered on their needs. To help patients with a high-risk pregnancy have a safe birthing experience, OB/GYNs will lead the care team.”
