Morning fire damages apartment complex, shuts down nearby roads

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — An apartment fire shut down part of South Avenue in Springfield on Friday morning as firefighters worked to knock down heavy smoke pouring from the west side of a building along the 900 block of South Avenue.

Reports show calls for the Springfield Fire Department came in just after 8 a.m. near South Street. Multiple engines and ladder trucks were seen at the scene, and traffic was impacted in the area while crews fought the fire.

Witness video shows thick, dark smoke rising from the west side of one of the apartment buildings as firefighters moved in.

Residents said they woke up to water hitting their windows as first responders began spraying the building…
