Annual tornado drill canceled Wednesday in Joplin due to storm threat

JOPLIN, Mo. (KOAM) – The City of Joplin has canceled its annual tornado drill scheduled for Wednesday, March 4, because of storms forecast for Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service office in Springfield, Missouri, which serves far southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri, announced it will not participate in the drill due to the potential for thunderstorms. Other parts of the state may still move forward, but the NWS Springfield area of responsibility will not.

City officials note that regular testing of outdoor weather sirens will continue as usual at 10 a.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. The next test is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, weather permitting…
