Former Springfield postal worker sentenced for after-hours post office burglary, mail theft

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Edited News Release/KY3) – A former U.S. Postal Service employee has been sentenced to more than a year in federal prison for burglarizing a local post office and stealing mail.

U.S. District Judge Beth Phillips sentenced Zachary M. Walker, 39, to 12 months and one day in prison. Walker was also ordered to pay $2,100 in restitution, forfeit an additional $2,100, and serve three years of supervised release following his imprisonment.

Undercover operation captured burglary on camera

On July 24, 2024, inspectors with the United States Postal Inspection Service placed a hidden camera inside a local post office building as part of an undercover operation. Investigators had learned that Walker was entering the building after hours, using his knowledge of postal procedures and a code to unlock an exterior door. Investigators say Walker targeted specific mail storage bins, stealing $2,100 in property from various mail matter bins.
