Man accused of flooding Springfield shelter crisis line with hundreds of calls, threats

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A local man is facing a felony after he allegedly repeatedly called a Springfield shelter’s crisis line hundreds of times over several days, making threats that caused the organization to partially evacuate and shut down some operations for staff safety.

According to online court dockets, Phillip Andrew Bates, born in 1993, is charged with first-degree terrorist threat, a Class D felony, in Greene County Circuit Court.

Police were first dispatched around 7:40 p.m. March 6 to the shelter in Springfield after staff reported Bates had called the hotline more more than 60 times requesting to speak with a female resident, according to the probable cause statement…
