Georgetown University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham have been added to the highly prestigious Association of American Universities, the AAU announced Thursday.
The two additions bring the organization’s membership of leading research universities to 73 (71 U.S. and two Canadian universities). The last time any universities were invited to join the AAU was 2023, when Arizona State University; the George Washington University; the University of California, Riverside; the University of Miami; the University of Notre Dame; and the University of South Florida joined.
“We are proud to welcome these two outstanding universities to AAU,” the association’s president, Barbara R. Snyder, said in a statement. “We look forward to working together with both of them to continue advancing and improving higher education and driving the critical American university research and innovation behind the breakthroughs that strengthen the U.S. economy, lead to new cures and treatments for Americans, help hardworking farmers improve their yields and safeguard crops and livestock from disease, and help protect our military service members in the field.”…
