(Alabama)– In May 2018, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced the state would send a UH-72A Lakota helicopter, a flight crew, and aircraft maintainers to help Governor Gregg Abbott with the ongoing migrant crisis going on at the US-Mexico border.
The 2018 press released stated:
The Alabama National Guard is always ready to assist our friends and partners on the border and continue the ongoing mission for homeland security. The mission will operate under the direction of the Texas National Guard and provide an additional tool for observation and tracking of illegal activity in the region. The soldiers will not be conducting law enforcement operations. We’re proud our soldiers are mentally and physically equipped to handle the challenges of the task.
More Support From Alabama
Three years later in July 2021, Ivey sent more troops to the border to combat the growing crisis. At that time, Alabama Congressman, Jerry Carl, congratulated Ivey for her actions. According to the AL Reporter, in May 2021, Ivey and other governors sent the Biden Administration a letter requesting for actions to be taken to decreased the humanitarian crisis Governor Abbott was dealing with at the border. Ivey also expressed at this time that under current policies, every state has become a border state and that Alabama remains strong with protecting the Southern Border by sending 275 troops to Texas.
