The Alabama Democratic Party (ADP) voted Saturday to approve new bylaws that restore almost all diversity caucuses eliminated at a meeting of the party last May.

The 115-32 vote by the State Democratic Executive Committee (SDEC) came after the Democratic National Committee gave the state party an order to amend or pass a new set of bylaws to resolve a divisive battle over the eliminated caucuses.

“I motion that we adopt the bylaws that this meeting was called to address. These are the bylaws that we proposed in response to challenges made as well as a consultation review,” said Joe Reed, the ADP vice chair for minority affairs.

Several members of the SDEC said the new bylaws contained changes they had not seen before Saturday. Attorney and ADP vice chair for county affairs Ben Harris said there was a “slight amendment” to the proposed amended bylaws emailed 10 days before the meeting.
