Alabama’s Governor Kay Ivey has signed Executive Order 738. This order establishes a task force to study the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in state executive-branch agencies. The task force will review current GenAI uses and suggest policies to optimize its benefits for Alabama’s residents.
The Governor’s Task Force on Generative Artificial Intelligence will include seven cabinet members, two representatives from higher education in Alabama, and four legislators. The governor will appoint these members, who will submit a report by November 30, 2024. This report will outline the use of GenAI in executive-branch agencies and evaluate any risks.
Executive Order 738 also includes measures to promote responsible GenAI development. The Office of Information Technology will set up a cloud infrastructure. This will allow state agencies to run GenAI pilot projects in approved settings. These settings will help state agencies and departments assess GenAI tools and services.
The order encourages all state executive-branch agencies to consider GenAI pilot projects. They should consult with experts from the state government, academia, and industry. These projects should evaluate how GenAI can enhance residents’ interaction with government services and support state employees.
