Alabama House passes gambling bills

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — People CBS 42 News spoke to say they want to gambling to come to Alabama and believe it will have many benefits for the state.

Birmingham resident Sherita Stallworth tells she traveled across the state line one to two times a month to play the lottery. She says having a state lottery will not only keep her from having to travel to other states but have several benefits for Alabama.

“Education of course, the schools will get so much money and it will help with taxes just a lot of things it will do to make Alabama better,” Stallworth said.

Entrepreneur and comedian Jay Walker also believes legalizing gambling is a win for the state.

“I feel like it will create so many funds, income and revenue for the state,” Walker said. “If you look at other states like Georgia and Florida and what it has done for them it will be a great thing for us in the state of Alabama.”

Last Thursday, the state house of representatives passed house bill 151 and house bill 152. The bills would legalize 10 casinos, sports betting, and a state lottery. It also creates a gaming commission, a law enforcement division and a process for casino licensing and sports betting.
