Mississippi and Alabama joined South Carolina and Texas in commemorating Confederate Memorial Day. The holiday remembers and honors the estimated 258,000 Confederate soldiers who died during the American Civil War. The war lasted a little more than four years from April 12, 1861, through May 26, 1865.
