Alaska Has Millions in Unclaimed Money and Property, Waiting for Owners to Claim It

Unclaimed property is any intangible amount owed or held by an organization that remains unpaid, uncashed for an extended period of time. Most property is considered abandoned after three years. Alaska currently has roughly 1.6 million individual unclaimed properties totaling $243 million on record, according to Michelle Norman and Pamela Leary, with the Alaska Department of the Treasury. If a claimant can prove they are legally entitled to the money, the state is required to pay it.

The property comes from many sources including, but not limited to, associations, banks, churches, clubs, communities, corporations, credit unions, insurance companies, financial institutions, governmental entities, restaurants, retailers, and utilities.
