Monthly $12 surcharge to hit over one million Americans’ electricity bills from March 8 – and some face more extra fees

OVER one million Americans will see their monthly energy bills increase from March 8 after local commissioners approved a rate hike.

Customers of Arizona Public Service Co. can expect an 8% monthly increase in their bill, a spike that will average between $10 and $12 extra per household.

Residential customers with rooftop solar systems will also be hit with an added monthly charge of between $2.50 and $3 after the vote from the Arizona Corporation Commission on Friday.

The increase in bills per customer will depend on the rate plan and energy use.

“We ended up with about an 8% increase,” Ted Geisler, president of Arizona Public Service Co (APS), told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona’s Morning News.

“That number still needs to be finalized today.

“While this increase is definitely less than our original request, we think the commission found a fair balance between trying to protect customers but also ensure that we’re able to recover costs so that we can continue to invest in the grid and strengthen reliability for future summers,” he added.
