Opinion: This right-wing rag wants dirt on Gallego’s divorce. Lake couldn’t be happier.

A right-wing online publication is trying to get the Arizona Court of Appeals to unseal the divorce records of Rep. Ruben Gallego, hoping to get some dirt on the Democratic Senate candidate that might help Republican Kari Lake’s flagging campaign.

Lake, who isn’t a party to the lawsuit, is nonetheless wildly enthusiastic about the scheme, writing on social media, “Ruben is demanding the courts grant him special treatment to seal his divorce records It’s absurd. No one else gets these kinds of protections We have reason to believe he’s hiding something BAD in these records Arizonans deserves to know what that is”

This isn’t a new tactic.

An attempt to smear Gallego was made earlier in the year, on the same topic, by the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which produced an attack ad calling Gallego a “deadbeat dad” over the circumstances of his divorce and remarriage.

It’s an old story.

Kate Gallego publicly endorsed Ruben Gallego

Gallego has spoken and written about that aspect of his life. He and current Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego separated in 2016 and divorced in 2017, shortly before the birth of their son. The couple remains friendly, co-parenting.
