Drunken driving arrests represented about 4.5% of traffic stops across Arizona on New Year’s Eve, according to data from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
The number of DUI arrests made on the holiday, 142, was roughly the same as last year’s New Year’s Eve, when 141 DUI arrests were made and about a 37% decrease from 2022. On New Year’s Eve 2022, DUI arrests represented 5.6% of traffic stops. On New Year’s Eve 2023, the share was 4.6%.
For at least the past two years, New Year’s Eve saw DUI arrests make up a larger share of traffic stops than the respective calendar years. During the 2022 calendar year, DUI arrests represented about 2.6% of traffic stops, according to the State of Arizona Highway Safety Annual Report from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. In 2023, DUI arrests represented 2.3% of traffic stops.
Of the DUI arrests made on New Year’s Eve 2024, nearly 90% were misdemeanors. Under Arizona law , people who are arrested for driving under the influence for the first time spend 10 days in jail, have driving privileges suspended for six months or longer for people under age 21 and an interlock device installed in their vehicle for six months to a year. They also pay up to $1,250 in fines.
