Arkansas woman shares her journey with heart disease on National Wear Red Day

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.- An Arkansas woman shared her difficult experience of having two heart attacks and facing heart disease.

According to the American Heart Association, nearly 45% of women over the age of 20 are living with some form of cardiovascular disease, and heart disease is the number one killer of new moms as the leading cause of maternal mortality.

Survivng not one but two heart attacks, Monica Mackey-Walker defies all heart disease statistics set in place by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention

The CDC states that heart disease is the number one killer of women and the number one cause of death in Arkansas. Monica Mackey-Walker said that heart disease will not be her killer.

Mackey-Walker walked through her harrowing experience of having a heart attack.

“It was just a normal day, and I was laying in bed watching TV and doing my normal routine,” she said. “I was laying in the bed, and my chest started hurting a little bit, so I was just thinking maybe it was something that I ate, so I sat up, then I could just feel the pain coming down my arms, so I knew something wasn’t right.”
